Lophophora Williamsii Seeds | Peyote Cactus Seeds
Peyote seeds, or fresh Lophophora williamsii cactus seeds, will grow into a bluish, globular plant. The Lophophora williamsii cactus, commonly known as peyote, is a rare spineless cactus native to Mexico and South Texas. This species produces white wool and develops well-defined ribs as it matures; these ribs can indicate the plant’s approximate age. Young plants typically have five ribs, while older specimens can have up to thirteen. Lophophora usually grows solitary, but it can also grow in clusters. It has a large subterranean taproot that acts as a water reservoir during dry seasons.
Growing this cactus is rewarding due to its lack of spines, and once mature, it regularly produces beautiful pink flowers throughout the summer. One of the advantages of most Lophophora williamsii plants is that only a single specimen is needed to produce seeds. However, Lophophora is a slow grower, often taking about a decade to reach flowering age under ideal conditions. Though they can be finicky to cultivate, dedication and persistence will lead to healthy plants. This small cactus is very slow-growing, but with fresh seeds and the right supplies, anyone can successfully grow Lophophora williamsii at home and help preserve it for future generations.
It requires well-draining soil, dry conditions, and infrequent watering. Lophophora enjoys the company of other plants and thrives when potted in large groups. It should also be grown in partial shade to avoid damage from intense sunlight.
The peyote cactus grows very slowly, taking about a year for the seeds to develop roots and begin to grow.
Usage
Peyote seeds are intended for germination and cultivation only, not for consumption.
Lophophora Williamsii Seed Growing Instructions
1. Fill seed trays or small pots with a compost mix and flatten it gently.
2. Soak the compost with boiling water to eliminate parasites. Allow it to drain and cool for about an hour.
3. Evenly sprinkle seeds over the compost mix, then gently press them down and level them with the top of the mix using a spoon.
4. Cover the trays with a seed tray cover or enclose the pots in zip-lock plastic bags.
5. Place them under grow lights or in a well-lit window, but not in direct sunlight, as this could scorch the seedlings. The temperature should be between 60 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit (15 and 37.5 degrees Celsius).
6. If the pots are in zip-lock bags, they might not need watering for months. If seed trays start to dry out, spray the surface to moisten it.
7. Seeds should germinate within 2 to 14 days.
8. When seedlings are about six weeks old, gradually slide the tops of trays open each day to acclimatize them to their surrounding environment. If using pots in zip-lock bags, start poking small holes in the bags each day for a couple of weeks to help acclimatize the seedlings.
9. Keep seedlings in indirect sunlight for about six months, then slowly increase their exposure to more light. Seedlings should be lush green if the lighting is appropriate. If the epidermis turns red, it indicates they are receiving too much light, in which case you should raise the lights or shade the window with suitable material, such as cheesecloth.
10. Do not rush to repot your seedlings. Lophophora enjoys the company of others, so wait until they are truly competing for space.
Seedlings typically germinate in three to ten days, but some can germinate in as little as 24 hours. Initially, they will appear as small green balls, but with a trained eye, you will soon notice the cotyledons and the first set of areoles.
