San Pedro Cactus Peruvianus
The hallucinogenic San Pedro cactus (Trichocereus Peruvianus) has been used for thousands of years, with an unbroken tradition in Peru that spans over 3,000 years. The earliest depiction of the cactus is an engraving of the mythological San Pedro, belonging to the Chavín culture (circa 1420-380 BC). The San Pedro cactus is renowned for its psychoactive properties, primarily due to the presence of mescaline (3,4,5-trimethoxyphenethylamine), a psychedelic alkaloid. It is sometimes combined with other psychoactive plants such as coca, tobacco, Brugmansia, and Anadenanthera. Pre-Inca monks used the Peruvian cactus to brew a mixture known as “cimora,” “achuma,” or “huachuma,” which was used for medicinal purposes and ritual ceremonies from about 900 BC to 200 BC.
Effects of Mescaline in San Pedro (Trichocereus Peruvianus)
The effects of the San Pedro cactus are incredibly strong, making it unsuitable as a recreational party drug. These effects can lead to transformative spiritual experiences. Users report that the ego plays a significant role during the mescaline trip, serving as a mirror to oneself. If one has self-awareness, they may navigate the experience differently than someone lacking self-knowledge; for the latter, the trip could radically alter their perception of contemporary life.
While using San Pedro, users may experience:
– Altered perception and changes in the perception of the world during a ritual.
– Enhanced color and intensity in visions.
– Distorted outlines or objects that radiate light.
– Variations in the perception of time and space.
– A sensation that time has stopped.
– Heightened sensory perceptions (synaesthesia), where music is visualized, photographs come to life, and tactile experiences feel different.
– Sensitivity to changing moods.
– Insights into personal life or an increase in wisdom.
– A magical or religious experience.
– Emergence of deep-rooted issues that can be recognized and addressed through insights gained during the trip.
The San Pedro cactus enriches one’s mental and spiritual perspective with wisdom.
San Pedro: Not a Recreational Drug
It is important to note that the San Pedro cactus is not taken for enjoyment; rather, it is a potent spiritual entheogen. The San Pedro cactus reveals profound truths about oneself, often accompanied by intense hallucinations and visions. These experiences are deeply personal and often evoke strong emotions, making avoidance of feelings impossible. Users may experience a cleansing of the soul, allowing them to confront and release negative emotions carried for a lifetime. For safety, it is recommended to use San Pedro with a companion present.
What Makes San Pedro (Trichocereus Peruvianus) Psychedelic?
Mescaline, a naturally occurring psychedelic alkaloid, is similar in structure to the body’s neurotransmitter epinephrine (adrenaline). This similarity allows mescaline to bind to serotonin and dopamine receptors in the brain, producing psychedelic and hallucinogenic effects. In addition to mescaline, the San Pedro cactus contains other substances that also contribute to its psychoactive effects.
Preparing Mescaline from San Pedro (Trichocereus Peruvianus)
To consume the San Pedro cactus, it must first be processed. While you can dry the cactus and grind it into powder, doing so may lead to stomach cramps. To avoid this, it is advisable to make a drink from the San Pedro using the following steps:
1. Work hygienically and wear gloves.
2. Remove the thorns.
3. Cut the cactus lengthwise between the ribs.
4. Peel off the transparent skin, and if necessary, grate the green flesh from the skin.
5. Cut the cactus into slices approximately 1 cm thick.
6. Place the 1 cm thick slices in an oven at 50 °C until the texture feels dry. Alternatively, you can let the slices dry in the sun.
7. Grind the dried slices into a fine powder (note that consuming the powder directly may lead to stomach cramps).
8. Place the San Pedro powder in one pot with water and boil it for several hours.
9. As it boils, the active substances dissolve into the cooking water.
10. Pour the cooking water into a larger pot (pot 2).
11. A paste will remain in the first pot. Refill this pot with water.
12. Repeat steps 8, 9, and 10, a total of 4 to 5 times.
After this process, the resultant liquid can be consumed safely for its psychoactive effects.
