Peruvian Torch Cactus
The Peruvian Torch Cactus, scientifically known as Trichocereus peruvianus, is native to the high Andes. This hardy and easy-to-grow columnar cactus can grow approximately one foot per year, reaching heights of over 15 feet, with some records showing it can grow up to 40 feet. The cactus is ribbed, typically having 6 to 8 ribs, and it is a branching species, often developing several side arms.
Trichocereus peruvianus is closely related to the San Pedro Cactus (a mescaline-containing cactus) but is much less common. While it resembles the San Pedro, it has longer spines and a darker coloration, which can sometimes appear blue. Interestingly, Trichocereus peruvianus tends to grow faster and is even more resilient than San Pedro.
Effects of the Peruvian Torch Cactus
The Trichocereus peruvianus* cactus can lead to experiences that feel like walking through a fantasy world, characterized by colorful visions and spiritual insights, often accompanied by feelings of happiness. However, since the amount of mescaline varies among different species within the Trichocereus genus, it is challenging to predict the intensity of the experience. The trip typically lasts between 6 and 12 hours and is generally considered to be more pleasant than that of peyote, with reduced nausea during the first hour after consumption.
Usage
For a light to moderate experience, one small cactus is usually sufficient; for a more intense experience, larger cacti may be required. Specifically, consuming 2 small or 2 large cacti can result in a very strong trip.
While it is possible to eat Trichocereus peruvianus raw, the taste is quite unpleasant.
Another method of consumption involves making a drink. First, remove the long thorns and discard them. Then peel the skin off the cactus, as the flesh contains the highest concentrations of mescaline. Allow the cactus to dry, and once dried sufficiently, grind it into a powder. This powder can be mixed with a sweet and fruity beverage, such as orange juice.
Alternatively, you can bake Trichocereus peruvianus before consumption. First, dry the cactus, then cut it into slices, and bake them in an oven set to 50°C for 4 to 5 hours. Ensure to remove all thorns, as they are inedible!
